All to often people focus on the advanced high end parts of SQL Server without getting a good grounding in the basics of SQL Server. About Denny Cherry Denny Cherry has over a decade of experience managing SQL Server, including some of the largest deployments in the world. Denny’s areas of technical expertise include system architecture, performance tuning, replication and troubleshooting. Visual Studio Async CTP – Simplified Asynchronous Programming - Reed Copsey

As the expectations of our end users increases, asynchronous programming has become significantly more important. Whether working in Silverlight, Windows Forms, WPF, or even when writing services, introducing blocking in our code is no longer acceptable. This talk will discuss and demonstrate the existing asynchronous programming models, including the newest asynchronous programming model introduced in .NET 4. We'll then demonstrate the new Visual Studio Async CTP, and show how the next release of Visual Studio will dramatically improve the developer experience when writing asynchronous code.

Reed Copsey, Jr. is the Chief Technical Officer of C Tech Development Corporation and a current Microsoft Visual C# MVP. He has spent the last 9 years leading a development team for a small independent software vendor which creates software for scientific analysis and 3D visualization of geology and groundwater contamination data. Have you been wondering what it’s like to build apps for Windows Phone 7 (WP7)? Wondering where to start? Want to hang out and play with some actual WP7 devices?

In this session, we will give an overview of the Windows Phone Developer Tools (Visual Studio, Blend) and will build an app together. There will be a number of phones on hand for you to use for the evening (the phones will even have the forthcoming “Copy & Paste” build on them). You will be able to deploy your app to these phones so you can test & get the full experience.

Please be sure to BYOL and install the tools beforehand so that we can hit the ground running. Tools can be downloaded from http://create.msdn.com (check under “resources > downloads”). There are also lots of great resources on this site and you are encouraged to explore prior to the session. A key contributor to this is Code First, an upcoming EF capability that provides a code-centric experience for interacting with models and databases. The Productivity Power Tools are an evolving set of free extensions to Visual Studio 2010 that aim to help developers read, write & navigate code. In this talk, I’ll demonstrate how to find these extensions on the Visual Studio Gallery and how each of them can solve problems that developers face on a daily basis including:

 

• Using the Solution Navigator to gain insight into the structure of your projects
• Finding and adding a reference faster than in any previous version of Visual Studio
• Using Quick Access to discover hidden features in Visual Studio

Animation in Silverlight - Robert Green

 

Most likely, you think of animation as a series of frames, like in a cartoon. Over time, you move through the series of frames, and the variation of frames over time gives the effect of motion. That’s the way animation works in cartoons, but that’s not how animation works in XAML. XAML animation revolves around changing the value of a property over time. Animation is how you get buttons to grow or shrink and how you get elements to move, either by themselves or in response to a user action. In this talk, you’ll see how animation works in Silverlight applications and you’ll see how to add animations both in Visual Studio and using Expression Blend.

Code Contracts for .NET: The Best Way to Make Good Code Better - Mike Barnett

 

Tell me if you’ve heard this story before. A few Microsoft competitors are making huge strides forward in a technology area that Microsoft has ignored for years. Code Contracts for .NET is a design-by-contract framework that all .NET programs can take advantage of. Using library methods, programmers specify method pre- and post conditions and object invariants to record their design decisions. These specifications are then used to perform runtime checking, static checking, documentation generation, and design-time guidance. And those are just the tools we’ve already built! They have been available at DevLabs for over a year now (with a commercial-use license!). We need your feedback in order to see if this is something that Microsoft should support more fully.

 

Mike Barnett is a Research Software Design Engineer in the RiSE team at Microsoft Research. He has been at Microsoft Research since 1995 and likes all things programming languages.

WCF Data Services, formerly known as ADO.NET Data Services, provide developers a way to create data services for the Web. WCF data services use the Entity Framework and expose data using simple URIs. That way, clients can work with data in a RESTful way using standard HTTP verbs such as GET, POST, PUT or DELETE, rather than having to use SOAP. The biggest benefit is that you can expose data in an easier fashion to more applications. This talk will show you how to create WCF data services and how to call them from client applications to retrieve and modify data.

Suddenly, Microsoft realizes that they are going to lose big time in this area if they don’t get busy. They wake up from their slumber and attack the problem with great energy. If fortune is with them, they pull off a last minute reprise and build a successful product in this area. Sound familiar? Well, they’re doing it again. It’s time to play the catch-up game in the phone market. This time it’s the iPhone and Droid that are making Microsoft sweat. The good news, for us programmers, is that Microsoft is completely rethinking their phone strategy. Whether it’s the hardware, the Marketplace store, or the Silverlight and XNA programming tools it’s a completely new way to think about the Microsoft phone. Join me as I explore this interesting new world for .NET programmer. I plan on showing lots of programming examples, and even a sample phone during the evenings talk.

Paul Litwin is a developer specializing in ASP.NET, C#, SQL Server, SQL Server Reporting Services, and related technologies. Paul is a Programmer Manager with Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. “For the past two decades, we have lived under a ‘tyranny of the relational’, such that any discussion of data storage and persistence inevitably centers around the ‘big honkin’ centralized relational database’. But recently, a new idea, championed by the ‘NoSQL’ movement, holds that the relational database isn’t the only way to store data, and that, in fact, there are significant advantages to looking at alternative ways to store data. One of these implementations is the MongoDB document-oriented database, and in this presentation we’ll look at MongoDB, what it is, how it works, and how it’s different—in some cases radically so—from the relational database you’ve come to know, love, and loathe.”

Drawing ideas from languages all over the programming language landscape, it can often be confusing and difficult to reconcile all these different ideas within the C# language. In this presentation, we’ll go over what a ‘multi-paradigm’ language is, why it’s important to identify these different paradigms, what the different paradigms are in C#, and how they all work together (or don’t).”

 

Ted Neward is an independent consultant specializing in high-scale enterprise systems, working with clients ranging in size from Fortune 500 corporations to small 10-person shops. He is an authority in Java and .NET technologies, particularly in the areas of Java/.NET integration (both in-process and via integration tools like Web services), back-end enterprise software systems, and virtual machine/execution engine plumbing. An avid reader and Starbucks junkie, you will inevitably find Mithun riding a caffeine high with a book in his hand. Before joining the MSDN Events roster, he served as a product manager with the Microsoft Speech Server team, from the product’s incubation to the final release of Microsoft Speech Server 2007. Mithun also conducted a road show evangelizing and recruiting partners and ISVs to expand the Speech Server partner ecosystem and conducted trainings across the country. He’s passionate about the unified communications sector and loves applying his technical background and business savvy to make Microsoft a top player in the field. He’s spoken at numerous conferences, including SpeechTek, Microsoft Global Briefing, ICCM, Tech Ready, TechEd, and the Microsoft Mobile and Embedded Devices Conference. Before joining Microsoft, Mithun worked at Oracle on the 9iAS product and at Aditi/Talisma Corporation on a CRM product for mid-market users. He enjoys meeting customers with different backgrounds and profiles, and helping them build products that will simplify people’s lives. Software Testing with Visual Studio 2010 – Brian Keller

Are you tired of spending hours trying to reproduce and diagnose bugs? Do you have a hard time getting testers and developers to talk to each other? Is it difficult to determine which tests are most important to run after you produce a new build? If so, then this session is for you! Software testing is perhaps the #1 area of investment for the application lifecycle management capabilities of Visual Studio 2010. During this session we explore the new software testing architecture offered by Visual Studio 2010. We also examine the various testing roles played by members of the development and testing teams and show how they will interact with Visual Studio 2010 to more effectively test software and eliminate bugs.

 

Brian Keller is a Senior Technical Evangelist for Microsoft specializing in Visual Studio and application lifecycle management. Brian has been with Microsoft since 2002 and has presented at conferences all over the world. Brian is a regular personality on MSDN’s Channel 9 web site, and is co-host of the popular show This Week on Channel 9. Brian recently co-authored Professional Application Lifecycle Management with Visual Studio 2010. Outside of work Brian can usually be found enjoying the great outdoors while either rock climbing, backpacking, skiing or surfing.
