A Lap Around Windows Azure AppFabric with Clemens Vasters
AppFabric is a set of middle-tier building block services you use in your applications that do all the hard work and heavy lifting as well as capabilities to help you construct and manage ALL the moving parts of your application. This session helps you understand what these services do, when you should use them and why you should not be building this sort of application infrastructure yourselves. It covers current as well as planned capabilities - Service Bus, Caching, Access Control, Workflow, Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) Services and Integration. We also cover the application composition model and management experience across these services so that you can understand how we will help you build, deploy and manage your application as one unit.

Animation in Silverlight - Robert Green
Most likely, you think of animation as a series of frames, like in a cartoon. Over time, you move through the series of frames, and the variation of frames over time gives the effect of motion. That’s the way animation works in cartoons, but that’s not how animation works in XAML. XAML animation revolves around changing the value of a property over time. Animation is how you get buttons to grow or shrink and how you get elements to move, either by themselves or in response to a user action. In this talk, you’ll see how animation works in Silverlight applications and you’ll see how to add animations both in Visual Studio and using Expression Blend.
Robert Green is a Senior Consultant with MCW Technologies. He is a Microsoft MVP for Visual Studio Tools for Office. Robert has written or co-authored AppDev’s Visual Studio, LINQ, Windows Communication Foundation and Windows Workflow Foundation courseware, and appears in the video training for these courses, as well. Robert is a member of the INETA Speaker Bureau and has been a frequent speaker at technology conferences. Before joining MCW, Robert worked at Microsoft for 8 years, as a Program Manager on the Visual Basic product team and as a Product Manager for Visual Studio, Visual Basic, Visual Studio Tools for Office and Visual FoxPro.

Code Contracts for .NET: The Best Way to Make Good Code Better - Mike Barnett
Tell me if you’ve heard this story before. A few Microsoft competitors are making huge strides forward in a technology area that Microsoft has ignored for years. Code Contracts for .NET is a design-by-contract framework that all .NET programs can take advantage of. Using library methods, programmers specify method pre- and post conditions and object invariants to record their design decisions. These specifications are then used to perform runtime checking, static checking, documentation generation, and design-time guidance. And those are just the tools we’ve already built! They have been available at DevLabs for over a year now (with a commercial-use license!). We need your feedback in order to see if this is something that Microsoft should support more fully.
Mike Barnett is a Research Software Design Engineer in the RiSE team at Microsoft Research. He has been at Microsoft Research since 1995 and likes all things programming languages.
WCF Data Services in Client Applications? - Robert Green
WCF Data Services, formerly known as ADO.NET Data Services, provide developers a way to create data services for the Web. WCF data services use the Entity Framework and expose data using simple URIs. That way, clients can work with data in a RESTful way using standard HTTP verbs such as GET, POST, PUT or DELETE, rather than having to use SOAP. The biggest benefit is that you can expose data in an easier fashion to more applications. This talk will show you how to create WCF data services and how to call them from client applications to retrieve and modify data.
So you want to be a Windows Phone 7 Developer? - Walt Ritscher
Tell me if you’ve heard this story before. A few Microsoft competitors are making huge strides forward in a technology area that Microsoft has ignored for years. Suddenly, Microsoft realizes that they are going to lose big time in this area if they don’t get busy. They wake up from their slumber and attack the problem with great energy. If fortune is with them, they pull off a last minute reprise and build a successful product in this area. Sound familiar? Well, they’re doing it again. It’s time to play the catch-up game in the phone market. This time it’s the iPhone and Droid that are making Microsoft sweat. The good news, for us programmers, is that Microsoft is completely rethinking their phone strategy. Whether it’s the hardware, the Marketplace store, or the Silverlight and XNA programming tools it’s a completely new way to think about the Microsoft phone. Join me as I explore this interesting new world for .NET programmer. I plan on showing lots of programming examples, and even a sample phone during the evenings talk.
Walt Ritscher's enthusiasm for crafting software interfaces blossomed early, first surfacing while coding on a borrowed Apple computer. Now he travels the world speaking at software conferences and teaching a diverse portfolio of programming topics. On the consulting side, he works with customers like Microsoft HP, Intel, and Intuit and enjoys being part of the Wintellect consultant group. He writes for several publications, including CODE Magazine, TechTarget and is featured as the Silverlight video author for Lynda.com. His current UI obsession includes Silverlight, Windows Phone 7 and WPF APIs. His blog can be found at blog.wpfwonderland.com. Walt is also a MVP and the author of the free Shazzam Shader Editor.

Busy .NET Developers Guide to MongoDB – Ted Neward
“For the past two decades, we have lived under a ‘tyranny of the relational’, such that any discussion of data storage and persistence inevitably centers around the ‘big honkin’ centralized relational database’. But recently, a new idea, championed by the ‘NoSQL’ movement, holds that the relational database isn’t the only way to store data, and that, in fact, there are significant advantages to looking at alternative ways to store data. One of these implementations is the MongoDB document-oriented database, and in this presentation we’ll look at MongoDB, what it is, how it works, and how it’s different—in some cases radically so—from the relational database you’ve come to know, love, and loathe.”
Busy .NET Developers Guide to Multiparadigmatic C# – Ted Neward
“C# is a rich and powerful language, perhaps too much so. Drawing ideas from languages all over the programming language landscape, it can often be confusing and difficult to reconcile all these different ideas within the C# language. In this presentation, we’ll go over what a ‘multi-paradigm’ language is, why it’s important to identify these different paradigms, what the different paradigms are in C#, and how they all work together (or don’t).”
Ted Neward is an independent consultant specializing in high-scale enterprise systems, working with clients ranging in size from Fortune 500 corporations to small 10-person shops. He is an authority in Java and .NET technologies, particularly in the areas of Java/.NET integration (both in-process and via integration tools like Web services), back-end enterprise software systems, and virtual machine/execution engine plumbing. Building Business Productivity Applications with Visual Studio 2010 - Beth Massi
The Visual Studio and Office teams have made significant investments in improving the developer experience for building and deploying Office and SharePoint applications. In this demo-heavy session, we will walk through a ton of demos and new tools that show you how to build business applications built on Office and SharePoint as well as how to integrate your line-of-business data via OData services. You’ll also see how to consume these services to create powerful BI data analysis in Excel 2010 and how you can extend Office client and server applications.

Improving Developer-Tester Collaboration with Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 - Doug Seven
Effective collaboration between developers and testers is paramount and can make the difference between shipping quality applications on time, or slipping because bugs are found late. In this session you will learn how Visual Studio 2010 can help you improve the collaboration of development and test activities in your team, regardless of who does them. You will learn how Microsoft Test Manager 2010 helps you execute tests and enables you to file rich, actionable bugs so whomever they get assigned to can easily understand the issue and begin to fix it. You will see how IntelliTrace helps you discover the root cause of a defect quickly, and finally how to automate your functional testing with Coded UI Tests.
Doug Seven is a senior product manager for Visual Studio Team System. Doug’s blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/dseven.
